From Water to Super-Water

In the age of modern medicines, where we run to medical stores to take a pill to cure even minor health issues, it's better to call up your mother or grandmother and ask what they would do in the same condition. This does not mean that you would not need to take any medicine but then medicine consumption would only provide temporary relief from the symptoms, rather than providing you with a long-term solution. The idea to prepare super-water is to extract important oils of the plant which have several healing properties into the water. Water is considered as a powerful therapeutic tool, whereas herbs & spices have been used for centuries to treat different health concerns by simple method - SOAKING. To prepare your super-water, you just have to soak some herbs in a jug full of water, leave it overnight, and drink it in the morning. You can also mix powdered herbs into the water and drink. CLOVE AND BLACK PEPPER WATER Clove contains eugenol that is known to promote digestion and...

Could Supplements Replace Food As The Main Nutrient Source?

When you go to some superstore to buy groceries, you are most likely to find a shelf of supplements right in the center. It is fascinating to see the number of supplements out there and people are falling for convincing marketing saying that they need to have certain supplements to maintain a healthy life. I'm not opposed to supplements, but then for me, the argument for food is that there's a lot of known and unknown substances in foods that we just can't account for in supplements.

Nowadays, people are more exposed to information, they read it online, hear it from society, through social media or see someone pick up a supplement from the shelf at a store and one eventually think of taking some for yourself - be it protein, omega, vitamins, calcium and so on and I think supplement use is becoming normalized, and it's not necessary as we can get it all by focusing on a well planned and balanced diet.

The only other thing to add to that is the protein, just to make sure we don't take too much protein because there's a propensity with weight gain, muscle bulk which can put pressure on other organs, particularly kidneys. So that would be the only other caution. Excess of any mineral can lead to toxicity as well which does cause harm to the body.

So if I give you an example - let's talk about is Vitamin C - we all know that orange is a good source of Vitamin C. Now about 1 medium-size orange will give you about 50 milligrams of Vitamin C, and obviously, we don't just get Vitamin C from oranges, we get it from the range of fruit and vegetables. If we take a tablet of vitamin C supplement, it will provide you 1,000 milligrams of pure vitamin C which is much more than your recommended daily intake and as Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin it is not even going to get stored in your body. So your body will just consume as much as it requires and rest will pass out from the body.

Food offers so much more than taking a pill. Sharing a meal is one of life's greatest joys as it connects us not only to food but also to people, to our family and our friends. So I think food offers so much more than supplements, and I guess, for example, even stimulating the gastrointestinal tract, when we're eating and chewing.

Pro-tip: Generally, people don't require those megadoses unless they've been recommended by a healthcare practitioner. Go save your money and spend some on real nutrition.

HOW FAMILY PLAYS IMPORTANT ROLE IN MANAGING HEALTH AND DISEASES

If you have a loved one who is addicted to alcohol or know someone who is trying to quit smoking, what do you do? You probably would advise them to stay away from liquor, throw away cigarettes to help them get over this toxic addiction, right?  Similarly, when we have a family member who is diabetic or obese or suffering from any other co-morbid condition, should we not support them in adopting a healthy lifestyle? Diabetes is a chronic illness requiring lifelong maintenance. A change in eating habits can be a challenge, so be a source of encouragement by meeting with their doctor and dietitian and learning the best diet strategies, and then helping them make better meal choices and doing it alongside them. It especially becomes difficult for women to manage home, children, work, and then plan and balance their meals. If you eat unhealthy foods around people who need or want to adopt a healthier eating pattern, this makes it harder for them to stick to the plan. Limit your intake...

If 'Calories-In' and 'Calories-Out' is the answer, why is it so hard for people to lose weight?

So anyone can tell you that if you want to lose weight you need to eat less food and do more exercise.  This advice is quite right, based on the principle that the body responds to its energy balance. But, if the principle of energy balance is so simple, then why is it so hard for people to lose weight? Our genetic inheritance as well as our environment also influences this balance. All people are different. The genes that we inherit from our parents can affect how easily we gain or lose weight. Some people will move around more than others and use up more energy. Some people absorb their food a little more efficiently than others. Some people have a stronger craving for fatty, sweet foods than others. So even in places where conditions make it hard for someone to gain weight, you will see people of different size and shape due to these inherited differences. When we talk about our societies, food is now plentiful, affordable, and always all around us. Have a look at your local sup...

Mindful Eating : When Talking Talk, When Eating Eat!

If we're not paying attention when we're eating, that's going to make it very hard to eat healthily, isn't it? Perhaps eating too much because we're not listening to the body and noticing those feelings of fullness or satiety can lead to overeating. If you don't listen to your body, and your body cues like what cravings you might have, or what actually works with your lifestyle and with that comes a lot of burden of chronic diseases, which are most driven by a sedentary lifestyle and eating habits. Like, if you don't chew your food properly, it is not only bad for your dental health but also would lead to poor digestion and also poor absorption of vitamins and minerals in food. To bring some mindfulness into your eating, you might just start by paying more attention to your body specially while you eat, noticing if you're actually hungry or perhaps you're eating because you're stressed or emotional. And then when you're eating, bring your ful...
