If you have a loved one who is addicted to alcohol or know someone who is trying to quit smoking, what do you do? You probably would advise them to stay away from liquor, throw away cigarettes to help them get over this toxic addiction, right? Similarly, when we have a family member who is diabetic or obese or suffering from any other co-morbid condition, should we not support them in adopting a healthy lifestyle?
Diabetes is a chronic illness requiring lifelong maintenance. A change in eating habits can be a challenge, so be a source of encouragement by meeting with their doctor and dietitian and learning the best diet strategies, and then helping them make better meal choices and doing it alongside them. It especially becomes difficult for women to manage home, children, work, and then plan and balance their meals.
If you eat unhealthy foods
around people who need or want to adopt a healthier eating pattern, this makes it harder for them to stick to the plan. Limit your
intake of sugary drinks, as well as highly processed and prepared foods,
especially in their presence or rather avoid bringing anything like that home
which they are not allowed to have. This will not only help your friend or
relative manage their disease but will also improve your health.
Regular
physical activity is also important as a healthy diet. Being active and losing
weight can lower blood glucose. So offer to become workout buddies and get
together a few times a week. This benefits both of you. You’ll have increased
energy, less stress, and a lower risk of developing illnesses, including heart
disease and cancer.
You may feel
helpless when a loved one is diagnosed with some condition and think you cannot
be of any help but trust me, your support can be their greatest strength and
can help this person get through the toughest times.
So be
positive, offer specific help and learn as much about the disease as possible.
These efforts may seem insignificant from your vantage point, but they can make
a huge difference in someone’s life.
You can’t
remove the disease, but you can offer support, comfort, and kindness in a number of ways.
Very well deceirived. Appreciate your effort. Thank you for sharing.
